INFO
Once upon a time, Youko was a normal school girl just trying to survive the postpubescent horror show that is high school. Then, a stranger whisked her away to another world where she was lost, betrayed, and generally had a rough time of it, sword in hand. Eventually, she learned why she was taken: she was the intended empress for the kingdom of Kei. It took time and a bloody overthrow of a pretender to take her throne, and then it took a rebellion to cast out corrupt ministers and governors in her dynasty. Three years into her reign, Youko is busy confusing the locals by applying the logic of her original world to her new one, talking about creating embassies and essentially starting the United Nations from scratch.
IMPRESSIONS
VISUALS
[✦/✦] Standing around 5'1" (155cm), Youko does not cut a particularly imposing figure, but her presence makes up for that. She has a lean build with a layer of muscle gained from sparring and actual combat. Her complexion is clear and sun-bronzed. She has deep green eyes and impossibly red hair that falls to her lower back when left loose.
DEMEANOR
From the outset, one might be surprised to find she has the bearing of a soldier. She's a direct person, someone who stands up straight and looks the person she's addressing dead in the eye. There's a great deal of forethought and warmheartedness in everything she approaches, from national concerns to interpersonal ones. Once she's chosen her course, she proceeds unflinchingly.
AURAL
[✦/✦/✦/✦] Youko's voice is slightly husky. She speaks from the chest, and her words come through round and clear without much exertion. She always speaks in an open and frank manner, but when she is presenting herself as the queen, she has a deliberate air to her. If she has to be commanding and forceful, she always has reserves to tap.
OLFACTORY
There is a fresh, outdoors scent about her. It's all pine and salt air and sun-warmed skin. A late afternoon breeze at the shoreline.
MENTAL
There are no mental shields to speak of (unless sheer willpower counts for something). There are numerous things you might find in there: anxious thoughts about the well-being of her people, dreams of a strange fruit tree swaying in a storm, a cackling voice in the dark, a bird that speaks with a soothing man's voice beside a pouch of silver grains. It just depends on the day.
ABILITIES
IMMORTALITY
As part of becoming the Empress of Kei, Youko has been added to the divine registry. Unless she is removed for misconduct, she will never age, grow ill, or naturally die. (The old stand-bys of beheading her or stabbing her through the heart still work though.)
UNIVERSAL TRANSLATION
Though it doesn't happen willfully, Youko has been granted the ability to understand and speak any language. (For example, if you were to speak to her in Chinese, she would hear Japanese. If she were to respond in Japanese, you would hear Chinese.) All immortals on the divine registry have this ability. However, it doesn't extend to the written word, a fact her tutors could tell you.
MARTIAL PROWESS
The path to her throne was not bloodless. Youko was first possessed by a youma who did the fighting for her, to protect her from danger at the behest of Keiki, but as time wore on she became competent in her own right. After the second rebellion in Wa province, Youko has been regularly training with two of her generals. While there's a long way to go, she can fight admirably to defend herself and others. Though her kirin frowns on her eschewing the shirei hinman's assistance.
SHIREI
The kirin is a holy creature who abhors violence and bloodshed, but mercifully possesses the ability to tame youma to act both as their servants and guardians. Bound in covenant to their master, these creatures lurk in shadow, unseen until called upon. As their master submits to their ruler, so do the shirei; so long as an order given by an emperor or empress does not endanger their master, the shirei will obey them. Keiki has a variety of shirei, though the ones Youko is best acquainted with (and most likely to call on in a pinch) are Jouyuu, Hyouki, and Hankyo.
THE SUIGUUTOU AND THE HEKISOUJO
Two of the royal treasures of Kei.
The sword is imbued with the spirit of a water demon and can thus show its master visions of all things and times. (They are not willfully conjured and can be a double-edged blade themselves. They can bewitch a weak master and often appear to fuel the anxieties of the wielder.) The blade itself is a touki, a weapon capable of cutting down the immortals of the Twelve Kingdoms, as well as demons and men. The last and most unique feature the sword carries is its fail-safe, a way to ensure that the ruler and kirin will never face the threat of it — only the ruler of Kei can wield it. In the hands of someone else, the sword grows dull, incapable of piercing flesh or even cutting grass.
The orb is panacea in the extreme. It is capable of healing wounds, curing illness, staving off hunger and easing fatigue, in addition to providing warmth and comfort. Unlike the sword whose scabbard it once hung from, the Hekisoujo can be utilized by any who hold it.
